The pain and suffering experienced by my sister, and her husband, right now must be unbearable. I cannot even imagine what she is going through.
My wife and sister have had very similar experiences during the past 12 months; blighted ovums, miscarriages and doing everything possible to conceive once again. Eventually both found themselves pregnant but then things got very different for them…
We had some scares, spotting and cramping, early scans at the hospital, but at 9 weeks our embryo has developed into a healthy foetus. Not so good for my sister. A scan showed a potential complication with the pregnancy, but further tests were required. Weeks later and the baby was diagnosed with Patau’s Syndrome (or Trisomy 13), a rare genetic disorder caused by having an additional copy of chromosome 13. Today, a further scan showed that the baby’s heart had stopped beating… he was a boy.
Baby Nicky, named by his brother Ethan, will forever be in our hearts.
